Dr. Behring was elected President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, fellow member of the American Association for Cancer Research and past president of the American Federation for Aging Research. He was an invited speaker at the Nobel Conference on Molecular Signal Transduction in Stockholm in 2007 and at the International Association for Cancer Research Congress held in Berlin in 2008.

He was awarded a lifetime achievement award from The American Society for Immunology and has received many other honors including honorary degrees from many universities including Florida International University and New York University Medical Center. Dr. Behring was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and was awarded their highest honor: The National Medal of Science.
